Biografie

Jahmaal Noel Fyffe (November 26, 1990), better known by his stage name Chip, is a British rapper and one of the few grime MCs that successfully crossed over into the American market. Born and raised in Tottenham, Chip grew up listening to grime forefathers Dizzee Rascal and Wiley, and started rapping under the pseudonym Chipmunk while he was still a teenager. At the age of sixteen, his song “Who Are You?” became an underground hit, helping Chip ensure a record deal with Sony Music’s Jive Records. I Am Chipmunk, his studio debut, came out in 2009 to great critical and commercial acclaim, reaching the top of the UK R&B Chart thanks to the Number 1 hit “Oopsy Daisy.” He followed this success with 2011’s Transition, a star-studded album that featured American artists Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, and Trey Songz. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the full-length still managed to break into the Top 10 in the UK. In the following years, the rapper shortened his name to Chip and signed with T.I. 's Grand Hustle for the mixtape London Boy (2012), which recruited Iggy Azalea, Meek Mill, Skepta, and Wretch 32. In 2013, he joined Atlanta-based hip-hop collective Hustle Gang on the mixtape G.D.O.D. (Get Dough or Die) and then dropped Rap vs. Grime, the 2015 mixtape that ignited feuds with Bugzy Malone and Tinie Tempah. After his brief infatuation with American hip-hop, Chip went back to his grime roots with League of my Own II (2017), Ten10 (2018), and Insomnia (2020) a collaborative full-length with Skepta and Young Adz. A year later, Chip and Malone buried the hatchet and teamed up for the single “Grown Flex,” included in Chip’s twelfth mixtape, Snakes & Ladders.
