Following the path of Grandmaster Flash, Funkmaster Flex was a DJ who came to dominate the New York rap scene in the 1990s. Born Aston Taylor, the son of a Jamaican DJ, he started in radio as an assistant to Chuck Chillout on Kiss FM. He eventually hosted his own show on the Hot 97 station and became one of New York's top hip-hop club DJs at The Tunnel.

Funkmaster Flex released his major label debut album, 'The Mix Tape, Vol 1: 60 Minutes of Funk', in 1995. He followed this with two more albums, 'The Mix Tape, Vol 2: 60 Minutes of Funk' in 1997 and 'The Mix Tape, Vol 3: 60 Minutes of Funk, The Final Chapter' in 1998.

His 1999 album 'The Tunnel' featured Jay-Z, Eminem, Snoop Dog, Mary J Blige, LL Cool J, Method Man, 2Pac, DMX and Notorious B.I.G. The following year he mixed a collection of rap hits on 'Vibe Hits, Vol 1'. He released volumes 4 and 5 of the '60 Minutes of Funk' series in 2000 and 2002.

He moved into a successful career as a TV presenter hosting shows such as 'Ride With Funkmaster Flex', 'All Muscle With Funkmaster Flex' and 'Car Wars With Funkmaster Flex'. He also hosts an annual custom car and bike show.
