Synth-pop songwriter Ryn Weaver began an internet sensation with her 2014 debut single, "OctaHate," whose viral popularity led to mainstream success the following year. She was born as Erin Michelle Wüthrich on August 10, 1992, and grew up in the San Diego suburb of Encinitas, California. Initially interested in pursuing an acting career, she attended college in New York City and began landing roles in short films, web programs, and TV shows like CSI: Crime Scene Investigation during her early twenties. It was in New York that she met pop songwriter and Grammy-nominated producer Benny Blanco, who signed her to a record deal. After moving home to California and adopting the alias of Ryn Weaver, she partnered with a supergroup of collaborators — including Blanco, Charli XCX, Passion Pit's Michael Angelakos, and Norwegian DJ Cashmere Cat — on "OctaHate," which was uploaded to her SoundCloud page in June 2014. An immediate hit, the song topped Billboard's Emerging Artists chart that same month and peaked at Number 27 on the Mainstream Top 40. Promises, Weaver's debut EP, was released later that summer, climbing to Number 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart and paving the way for her first full-length album, The Fool. Released in June 2015, The Fool debuted at Number 30 in America. Weaver earned additional success as a songwriter for other artists, penning JoJo's Top 10 club single "When Love Hurts" in 2015 and contributing heavily to the BTS/Charli XCX duet "Dream Glow," which topped the US World Digital Songs chart in 2019. Two years later, she earned an unexpected hit overseas with "Pierre," a track from The Fool that appeared on multiple European charts six years after its original release.
