Biography

Ohio-born guitarist and producer Tom Scholz formed the American arena rock band Boston in 1976 with vocalist Brad Delp, guitarist Barry Goudreau, bassist Fran Sheehan and drummer John Hashian and they had immediate success with a hit album and hit singles. Scholz has remained with the group ever since but many musicians have come and gone including Delp, who committed suicide in 2007. The current line-up features vocalist Tommy DeCarlo, Gary Phil on guitar and keyboards, percussionists Curly Smith and Jeff Neal, Tracy Ferrie on bass, and singer and keyboardist Beth Cohen.

The band kicked off in the city of Boston and had an instant smash with their 1976 debut release 'Boston', which flew up to number three on the Billboard 200 while the hit single 'More Than a Feeling' went to number three on the Hot 100 and two more popular singles followed: 'Long Time' at number 22, and 'Peace of Mind' at 38. Their second album 'Don't Look Back' came out two years later, topped the Billboard 200, and the title track reached number four on the Hot 100 while 'A Man I'll Never Be' reached number 38 and 'Feelin' Satisfied' went to number 36.

Line-up changes and legal issues over songwriting rights plagued the band for years and they did not release another album until 'Third Stage' in 1986. It went to number one on the Billboard 200 with tracks that included 'Amanda', which topped the Singles Chart, 'Can'tcha Say (You Believe in Me)/Still in Love', which went to number 20, and 'We're Ready', which reached number nine. Their fourth album, 'Walk On', climbed to number seven on the Billboard 200 in 1994 with the single 'I Need Your Love' charting at number 51. A 'Greatest Hits' release in 1997 went to number 47 on the 200 and 'Corporate America' in 2002 hit number three on the Independent Albums chart and Number 42 on the 200.

Boston's latest album, 'Life, Love & Hope', peaked at number two on the Billboard Independent Albums Chart, number five on Top Rock Albums and number 37 on the Billboard 200 in 2013. Tom Scholz led the current line-up on the Hyperspace Tour in 2017 and they continue to perform past the 40th anniversary of their formation.
